Wattpad's reader data became Naver's adaptation pipeline

In May 2021, Naver Corporation, the Korean internet group, recorded on its own corporate history page that it had “Acquired global no.1 web novel platform ‘Wattpad’.” Wattpad itself, founded in 2006 and marking its 20th anniversary in an August 2026 press release, describes itself as “the largest storytelling platform in the world,” where readers and writers share serialised fiction. Two years after the Naver deal, a WEBTOON Entertainment Inc. registration statement filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission records that Wattpad, “acquired by NAVER in May 2021,” was “subsequently acquired by us from NAVER in June 2023” — moving the platform from Naver's direct ownership into the separately listed WEBTOON group.

What the documents establish

The SEC filing states Wattpad had approximately 89 million monthly active users as of the quarter ended 31 March 2024, a figure used to describe the asset WEBTOON had acquired, not an audited revenue metric. Wattpad's own site does not repeat that number; it frames scale qualitatively, saying stories “can grow into books, films, series, and cultural moments beyond the platform.” The filing's language — web-novels are “digitally created, weekly serialized stories expressed through text” — sits beside its description of web-comics as “vertical, continuous graphical content,” a reminder that “vertical” in this business first meant a scrolling comic page, not a phone-shot drama. Wattpad's press page names a concrete adaptation: Leone Film Group and WEBTOON Productions are credited with adapting two Wattpad novels, “The Locker Exchange” and “Love Me, Love Me,” for Italian screen projects.

Announced versus delivered

What is recorded: two changes of ownership, a stated user count as of one quarter, and a named pair of in-progress adaptations. What is not established by these documents: how many Wattpad stories overall have reached screen, how adaptation revenue from Wattpad specifically compares with WEBTOON's webcomic adaptations, or what became of Wattpad's separate identity inside a group that also owns the Naver-founded webcomic business. The filing discusses IP Adaptations as a single combined line across the whole company; it does not break the figure out by originating platform, so a reader cannot use it to test whether Wattpad's model is a profitable pipeline on its own or a smaller contributor to a larger number.

What to watch

Editorially, the next test is whether WEBTOON's future filings begin separating Wattpad-originated adaptations from webcomic-originated ones, and whether any of those adaptations arrive as vertical, phone-shot drama rather than conventional film or television. Until a filing or an official announcement draws that line, describing Wattpad as a vertical-drama pipeline would overstate what the company itself has said.
