WEBTOON's own filing counts adaptations as long-form only

SEC filings put IP Adaptations at 7.6 to 8.4 percent of revenue and over 100 titles, but define the format as film and streaming, not vertical video.

What was announced or recorded

WEBTOON Entertainment Inc.'s public registration statement, filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on 17 June 2024, states that “over 100 different streaming series, films and animated series have been released based on WEBTOON stories,” naming Hellbound, All of Us Are Dead and Bloodhounds as titles that ranked first on Netflix. An earlier confidential draft registration statement, dated 9 February 2024 and later made public, reports that the company “generated $82.5 million of IP Adaptations revenue” in 2022, “approximately 7.6% of total revenue” of $1.08 billion that year.

What the documents establish

The June 2024 filing updates the adaptation share for the following year: IP Adaptations revenue was 8.4% of the company's $1,282.7 million total revenue for the year ended 31 December 2023, up from 7.6% of a smaller total the year before — a real increase in share as well as in the underlying business. The same filing defines web-comics as “digitally created, weekly serialized stories expressed through vertical, continuous graphical content” and defines IP Adaptations as covering “film, streaming series, games, merchandise and print books.” No phrase in either filing — vertical, short-form, micro-drama — describes a phone-shot drama format; the company's own use of “vertical” refers to the scroll direction of its comics, not to video. Naver's own corporate history dates an earlier structural step: 2018, when NAVER Webtoon created Studio N, described there as a “media adaptation and production subsidiary.”

Announced versus delivered

What is delivered, per the filings: a rising share of revenue from adaptations, a triple-digit count of released titles, and named long-form hits. What is not announced anywhere in either document is any vertical-drama initiative built on WEBTOON's own catalogue; the risk factor attached to this revenue line — the company “intend[s] to continue to diversify our monetization strategy and increase revenues from IP Adaptations, which may not be successful” — is written entirely around film, streaming and games. A reader should not infer a vertical-drama strategy from a company whose own filings describe adaptation exclusively in long-form terms.

What to watch

Editorially, the marker to watch for is the first filing in which WEBTOON names a vertical or short-form adaptation initiative explicitly, rather than one in which the company's use of “vertical” for its comic format is mistaken for a vertical-video ambition it has not yet stated.

  • Does any later WEBTOON filing introduce vertical or short-form video as a named adaptation format?
  • How does the 7.6-to-8.4 percent IP Adaptations share trend in the company's post-IPO annual reports?
  • Do any of the named Netflix hits trace back to Wattpad-originated text rather than WEBTOON-originated comics?

The filings are precise about what has been delivered — a growing, long-form adaptation business — and silent on the one format this dossier's readers most want to know about. That silence is itself a data point.
