A novel platform's terms do not carry adaptation rights

As retrieved on 16 September 2026, two platforms that host the serialised novels vertical dramas are often adapted from state similar but not identical terms. Wattpad's terms state a writer “own[s] all the rights to the content you create and post,” while granting Wattpad only “a nonexclusive license to publish your content” on the service. Webnovel's terms similarly state a user “retain[s] copyright and any other proprietary rights,” while granting Webnovel “a worldwide and non-exclusive right and license” to host, display and distribute the work, but “only through our Services.”

What the documents establish

Both standard terms are publishing licences, not adaptation licences. Each is explicitly nonexclusive, and each is bounded to the platform's own service — Webnovel's clause repeats “only through our Services” — so neither grants the platform, or anyone the platform deals with, a right to produce a drama, film or game from the work. Wattpad's terms separately note that “additional terms and conditions” can apply, naming its Wattpad Stars programme as one example, which signals that any adaptation-relevant rights are handled outside the general terms every user accepts on sign-up.

Announced versus delivered

What these terms govern is narrow: the platform's own right to display and distribute a work on its service. What they leave to others is everything a producer actually needs before adapting a novel — a direct grant from the author, or from whichever party holds adaptation rights under a separate agreement the author may already have signed; translation rights, if the source text is not in the production's language; and confirmed territory, since a nonexclusive web-publishing licence says nothing about film, television or vertical-drama rights in any country.

What to watch

This is an editorial checklist built from platform terms, not from any specific author's contract, and it should not be read as a claim that either platform blocks adaptation. Treat a platform's general terms as evidence of what the platform itself may do, and ask the author directly whether a separate rights or management agreement already assigns adaptation rights elsewhere.

• Has the author signed a separate agreement (a management deal, a platform incentive programme, or a publisher contract) that already assigns adaptation rights?
• Does the intended production territory and language require a translation right the platform's general terms do not grant?
• Who is the platform's contracting entity for rights questions, and is it the same entity named in the general terms?

A writer's platform terms describe hosting and distribution, not the chain of rights a vertical-drama adaptation needs. Confirming that chain means going past the terms every reader agrees to and finding the document, if any, that actually assigns adaptation rights.
