What was announced or recorded

Crazy Maple Studio's own company page states it released Chapters, “an immersive storytelling platform that places readers at the center of captivating narratives,” in October 2017 from San Francisco. The same page records that the studio launched ReelShort, its vertical drama app, in 2022, and My Fiction, a text-serial app, in 2020 — three products from one company, five years apart. A rival choice-based app, Episode – Choose Your Story, is listed on the App Store as published by Episode Interactive, part of Pocket Gems, a mobile studio founded in 2009.

What the documents establish

The App Store listing for Episode, current as retrieved on 16 September 2026, describes a freemium structure built on two currencies: gems, bought with real money, and passes, which regenerate over time; certain story choices and outfits require gem spending. In-app purchase tiers run from $0.99 to $19.99, alongside a $14.99 monthly VIP subscription. Crazy Maple Studio's page does not disclose Chapters' own pricing mechanics, but the company's continuity — one studio operating a gem-currency choice app, a text-serial app, and later a paid-unlock vertical drama app — is stated in its own words, not inferred from outside reporting. Pocket Gems' page names only Episode, Episode XOXO and War Dragons as its products and does not mention vertical video at all.

Announced versus delivered

What each company states is a product list and, for Episode, a monetisation structure; what is not stated by either page is a direct causal line from choice-app economics to vertical drama's per-episode unlock model. Crazy Maple Studio's own sequencing — Chapters in 2017, My Fiction in 2020, ReelShort in 2022 — is a fact the company records, not an argument it makes; its marketing describes each product on its own terms rather than as a lineage. Treating the resemblance between gem-gated choices and coin-gated episodes as a proven mechanism transfer, rather than a plausible reading of a shared company history, would go beyond what either page states.

What to watch

Editorially, the useful test is pricing structure rather than genre: does a platform sell a metered unit (a choice, an episode) for a small, repeatable sum, or a subscription for unlimited access? Chapters and Episode chose the metered model years before vertical drama existed; ReelShort's later coin economy is worth checking against that pattern rather than assumed to have invented it.

  • Does Crazy Maple Studio's own material anywhere describe Chapters as a predecessor to ReelShort's unlock economy?
  • Has Pocket Gems entered vertical video drama, or does it remain confined to choice-based text and avatar fiction?
  • What share of Episode's revenue, if disclosed anywhere, comes from gems rather than the VIP subscription?

Two companies, two currencies, one shared mechanic: sell the next beat of a story in small, repeatable units. What the record does not yet show is whether that mechanic travelled between formats by design or by coincidence of ownership.
