ReelShort launched under a parent that soon gave up its votes

What was announced or recorded

Crazy Maple Studio's own site states that it launched ReelShort, an English-language app of one-minute vertical drama episodes, in August 2022, distinct from its earlier apps Chapters (2019) and My Fiction (2020). Apple's App Store listing for 'ReelShort - Stream Drama & TV' records an original release date of 24 August 2022 and names the seller of record as New Leaf Publishing, Inc, not Crazy Maple Studio directly. Eight months later, a filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange by China Online Group Co., Ltd (stock code 300364) disclosed that its wholly owned unit COL Investment Group Limited then held 50.90% of the voting rights, though only 49.16% of the equity, in Crazy Maple Studio.

What the documents establish

The filing records that on 25 April 2023 China Online's board approved restructuring Crazy Maple's board so its management could nominate four of seven directors against three for China Online, cutting China Online's voting rights to 47.81% while its shareholding stayed at 49.16%. Below majority voting control, Crazy Maple would no longer be consolidated into China Online's statements, an accounting change rather than a share sale. The filing states Crazy Maple was established in California on 21 July 2016, a year earlier than the 2017 founding date the studio's marketing site gives, and lists its products at the time as Chapters, Spotlight, Kiss and My Escape, an inventory that does not name ReelShort though the app had already been live for eight months. An appraisal in the filing valued Crazy Maple's full equity at roughly RMB 227.8 million as of 31 December 2022, with the deconsolidation estimated to cut China Online's net profit by about RMB 50 million.

Announced versus delivered

Crazy Maple's marketing announces ReelShort as its flagship; the filing, written for shareholders, treats it as incidental to a governance change concerning older products. What was delivered by April 2023 was a documented shift of voting control to Crazy Maple's own management, not a sale of China Online's stake, which the filing states was unchanged. Whether that reflects growing independence, a restructuring that keeps ReelShort's revenue off a Chinese listed company's consolidated accounts, or both, neither document states; only the mechanism and the numbers are on record.

What to watch

Editorially, watch whether China Online's later annual reports still carry Crazy Maple as an associate at 49.16% equity, and whether Crazy Maple ever reconciles its 2016 filing date with its 2017 founding claim.
