A 'top-grossing' chart URL showed a free-app list when checked

Apple's and Google's own store pages ranked ReelShort and DramaBox differently within the same hour.

What was announced or recorded

Three store chart pages were checked on 16 September 2026: Apple's Entertainment category chart, Apple's chart at the site's 'top-grossing-apps' path, and Google Play's Entertainment category page.

What the documents establish

Apple's Entertainment chart rendered, on the date checked, as a Top Free list: ReelShort ranked 10th and DramaBox 11th, both behind a run of other short-drama apps, PineDrama, StoryReel, BlinkDrama and DramaWave, that filled positions two, four, five and eight. Apple's second page, despite a URL that names it 'top-grossing-apps', rendered as 'Top Charts - All Apps (Free)' at the same time; neither ReelShort nor DramaBox appeared in its top 25, which was led by ChatGPT, Vinted, Muse from Meta and Google Gemini. Google Play's Entertainment category page showed a distinct, tab-selectable 'Top grossing' shelf in which DramaBox ranked second, immediately behind TikTok Pro - Events; ReelShort did not appear in that shelf's visible top twenty, appearing instead in a separate, unlabelled ranked shelf higher on the same page alongside DramaBox, Netflix and several AI companion apps.

Announced versus delivered

For a reference record like this, what the page 'governs' is only what it rendered at the moment it was checked: a rank on a downloads-based Top Free list says nothing about revenue, and this exact retrieval shows that a URL labelled 'top-grossing-apps' is not a reliable guide to which list the page will actually display when opened. Google Play's page did carry an explicitly labelled grossing shelf; Apple's did not show one on either page checked, at least not by default, on this date.

What to watch

Editorially, the same three pages checked again on a different date, or from a different country storefront, would very plausibly show different ranks and possibly a different default tab; that instability is exactly why this record is filed as a single dated snapshot rather than a claim about a stable position.

  • Does the same Apple chart URL show a grossing list rather than a free list if checked from a different region or on a different day?
  • Would ReelShort appear inside Google Play's Top grossing shelf if the shelf were expanded past its visible top twenty?
  • Does either app's rank move together with the sensor-tower-estimated download and revenue figures reported elsewhere in this dossier for the same period?

A chart position proves an app was ranked that way on that store, on that date, under whichever tab the page happened to render; it is evidence about a moment, and the moment is the only thing this record claims.
