What was announced or recorded
Sensor Tower's January 2025 post and its later July 2025 post both describe how short-drama apps acquire viewers: primarily by buying advertising built from clips of their own episodes, run through platforms such as Meta and TikTok.
What the documents establish
The January 2025 post states that DramaBox and ShortMax each generated over 60 percent of their 2024 downloads through paid channels, and that ReelShort generated 70 percent of its downloads that way; combined, it states the tracked apps produced more than 5 billion ad impressions globally in 2024. The July 2025 post adds a narrower, app-specific figure: for DramaWave, paid advertising was 'a key driver' of user acquisition, accounting for over 80 percent of its downloads between September and December 2024, and it names Unity Ads as DramaWave's primary advertising platform in that window.
Announced versus delivered
Both posts describe volume and channel share, not spend: an impression count or a downloads-by-channel percentage is not a dollar figure, and neither post states what any app paid per install or in total. Reporting 5 billion impressions describes how often an ad was served, a different and generally larger number than how many installs it produced or how much it cost; treating impression volume as a stand-in for advertising budget would overstate the case these documents actually support.
What to watch
Editorially, converting a paid-download share into a cost figure needs a company's own disclosed marketing spend, which is rare for these largely private operators; a public platform's own filing can show growth in what it charges advertisers for this exact content type, which is the closer proxy this dossier can point to elsewhere, even though it prices the platform's side of the transaction rather than the drama app's.
- Do the cited paid-download percentages include installs from the app's own cross-promotion, or only third-party ad platforms?
- Would a named app's absolute marketing spend, if ever disclosed, scale with its impression count or with its download count?
- Has DramaWave's reliance on a single ad platform, Unity Ads, per the July 2025 post, changed in later periods?
A high paid-download share is evidence of a marketing-led growth model, not evidence of its cost; the two analyst posts opened here are useful for the first claim and silent on the second, and a careful reading keeps that boundary in view.
