Rights are part of the project
WIPO’s filmmaker guide describes clearance as identifying material and people involved in an audiovisual project, evaluating the circumstances of use and determining the rights or permissions required. It also connects that work to chain of title: the record of rights through which a project can be distributed. [WIPO]
For a research publication, the first job is to describe the documented relationship accurately. A source novel, a screen adaptation and an overseas version can involve different agreements. Similar stories or familiar tropes do not establish that one work is a licensed adaptation of another.
An adaptation discussion is not a licence ledger
Disney’s November 2025 Demo Day statement described discussions involving young-adult fantasy novels and exploration of albums as vertical shorts. The wording is evidence of development activity. A fuller story would need named works, confirmed parties and the stage reached. Questions about language, territory, duration and permitted formats are useful reporting prompts; they are not terms we can assume from a partnership headline.
Images need their own record
The dossier’s poster ledger records where each image came from, its credit and the owner-review status. That makes the source traceable. It does not prove a licence or permission to republish it.
The original files remain unchanged. A cropped card and a full-poster detail page are two presentations of the same asset, not two independently cleared works. Before release, the owner can approve permission, obtain a licence or choose a replacement. This local preview does not make that decision on their behalf.
Territory and timing matter
WIPO emphasises that rights analysis is territorial and can affect planning, budget and distribution. A broadly worded international checklist is therefore not a reliable answer to a specific production’s legal question. [WIPO]

For a real project, the applicable agreements and local professional advice need to be checked against the intended use and release territory.
